Monterey Wine Country, Wine Recommedations · March 18, 2022

SIP Certified Sustainable Wines from the Santa Lucia Highlands AVA.

Christy sits on the beach with SIP Certified sustainable wines from the Santa Lucia Highlands AVA.

I’m teaming up with SIP Certified to focus on two of my favorite things – supporting local wineries and sustainability. (Original instagram post was sponsored by SIP Certified, I have taken the text and reformatted it for this medium.)

The two wines I have here, the 2019 SLH Chardonnay from McIntyre Vineyards and the 2019 Lucia Pinot Noir from Lucia Vineyards (a label by Pisoni Vineyards) combine both – they are from the nearby Santa Lucia Highlands and both certified sustainable.

SIP Certified provides a third-party verification that a vineyard, winery or wine has implemented sustainable practices across the 3 P’s of Sustainability – People, Planet, Prosperity.

Santa Lucia Highlands is an American Viticultural Area here in Monterey County. The appellation produces fantastic Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, with over half of the acreage devoted to Pinot Noir. It’s also one of the appellations I visit most often, as it’s just thirty minutes from Monterey.

I brought these wines to the beach because Monterey Bay actually plays a big role in the climate of the Santa Lucia Highlands. One of the world’s largest submarine canyons is located offshore and Monterey Bay influences the appellation with fog and cooling maritime winds. If you’ve visited the area, I’m sure you’ve seen how windy it gets in the afternoon.

The 2019 SLH Chardonnay from McIntyre Family Wines is from their estate vineyard in the Santa Lucia Highlands.100% of McIntyre’s wine is SIP Certified and their vineyards too.

The owner, Steve McIntyre is an advocate for sustainable farming practices and is one of the founders of the Vineyard Team and SIP Certified program. With notes of apple, pear, lemon and a hint of pineapple, this Chardonnay also had a refreshing minerality and crisp acidity to it.

The 2019 Lucia Pinot Noir was my first time tasting this label from the Pisoni Family Vineyards. The Pinot is a blend from the Pisoni, Garys’ and Soberanes vineyards all in the Santa Lucia Highlands. With notes of ripe red fruit including strawberry and cherry, baking spice, a complex earthiness and great acidity –  this Pinot Noir was a showstopper for me.

And since these wines are SIP Certified, I know these wines were sustainably produced.

Monterey County is truly a special place. While I’ve lived in California for a long time now, and long enough in Monterey to call myself a local, the natural beauty of this area never ceases to take my breath away.

Monterey Happy Hour done right! If you and the gir Monterey Happy Hour done right! If you and the girls enjoy craft cocktails, then checkout @stokesadobe for your hangout.

I’m a big fan of a happy hour cocktail and appetizers, so when my friends and I decided to check out Stoke’s Adobe’s Happy Hour I was pleased with the unique cocktails on the Happy Hour menu.

Bartender @mezcalito_manny expertly mixed our drinks while we sat at the bar and chatted. I wanted to try something that different, and Manny told me about the latest cocktail he developed - Garden No. 7.

It’s his take on a gin based martini with tomato water, Sūpāsawā , Lustau Dry Vermouth, orange bitters, Condesa Gin and a hint of balsamic vinegar.

It was a really well balanced cocktail with a unique savory finish.
New menu is live at @atasteofmonterey wine bar and New menu is live at @atasteofmonterey wine bar and Executive Chef Bruce Finch has outdone himself this time! I really enjoyed the sweat and sour meatballs and the Singapore sauce for the poached shrimp was really good.

I also love that they’ve started a mocktail menu, it’s a great option for those who don’t drink or just want a non-alcoholic option. And the mocktails are so colorful!

A Taste of Monterey is my favorite wine bar in Monterey, and not only is the wine list and small bite offerings great but the view is absolutely amazing.

If you’re a local or just visiting Monterey, make sure to add this place to your list.

Thanks for inviting me to the menu sneak peak. I loved previewing the new small bites.

Wine and food pairings with a full a cooking demon Wine and food pairings with a full a cooking demonstration? Yes, please! I love the opportunity to learn, and at the inaugural @atasteofmonterey signature event we learned all about cooking paella from their executive chef @chefbrucefinch while sipping on @lepecellars wine.

We spent the afternoon at Lepe Cellar’s Marina winery listening to live music, dinning on hors d’oeuvres, sampling Lepe Cellar wines, and watching Chef Bruce prairie a giant dish of Paella. After watching the paella cook for almost two hours, I certainly worked up an appetite.

It was almost like a wine and food field trip, as A Taste of Monterey’s usually holds their events at their Cannery Row location in Monterey.

Thanks for hosting us Lepe Cellars and A Taste of Monterey! We look forward to your next event and can’t wait to see where you’ll host it.
