Around the World in Seven Days of Sparkling Wine – Japan

Christy poses at a blue and white table with a bottle of Hakkaisan AWA sparkling sake rice wine.

Our final stop on our World Tour of Sparkling Wine is Japan.

While Japan does grow grapes and make wine, today we are focusing on something a little different – Sparkling Sake! Please note that some of the wines in the “Around the World in Seven Days of Sparkling Wine” were provided to me as trade samples.

Sake is often referred to as “rice wine,” although it is brewed from rice, water, koji (a type of spore that grows on grains) and yeast.

It’s not known when sake was first developed in Japan. However, the first alcoholic rice drink was most likely made during the Yayoi Period (300 BC – 300AD) when rice cultivation was brought over from China.

Today’s featured sparkling is Awa Sparkling Sake from Hakkaisan.

Hakkaisan sake brewery was founded in 1922 and is located at the foot of Mount Hakkai in Niigata.

Niigata prefecture is famous for sake, and also has the most sake breweries in the country. Located a 2 hour Shinkansen (Bullet Train) ride from Tokyo, it’s on the Sea of Japan side of the country.

Niigata is also known for its snow and it’s believed that the melted snow benefits the mountain spring water used in sake production.

Awa sparkling sake is brewed in small batches in the traditional style, but also goes through a secondary fermentation in the bottle to create the bubbles.

Awa is made to be served chilled and can be served in a champagne flute or a traditional sake cup. I opted for a flute.

The bubbles were tiny and very vigorous with a nice mousse to it. The sake itself was crystal clear and it tasted a little sweet, but not as sweet as other sake I have tried.

I’m not that knowledgeable about sake, but I absolutely loved this sparkling take on traditional sake.

If you didn’t know, I grew up in Japan so I am very excited to showcase something special from home.

A collection of moments from our whirlwind trip to A collection of moments from our whirlwind trip to Germany for the Berlin Marathon. The last time I was in Berlin was in 2007, and a lot has changed in almost 20 years. I enjoyed revisiting spots I’ve been before and adding in some new-to-me ones too.

While Munich is the center for Octoberfest, we were still able to partake in a few Octoberfest celebrations in Berlin. I’m usually a wine drinker, but I really enjoyed trying different German Beers.

On a side note - as a chronic over-packer, I still can’t believe I managed to do the trip with carry-on luggage only.
Help me pick the @cruwinery Chowder Cook-off champ Help me pick the @cruwinery Chowder Cook-off champion! I’m a big fan of wine and food pairings, so you can imagine how excited I was when CRŪ Winery asked me to be one of the judges for their annual Chowder Cook-Off.

The two finalists prepared their chowders live in front of an audience at the winery while attendees sipped on wine and mixed and mingled.

Then when the chowders were ready the judging began.

As one of the members of the judging panel our job was to judge the chowders by the originality of the recipe, and how well it paired with CRŪ Chardonnay.

It was a really fun afternoon! This is my second year judging and it’s become one of my favorite annual traditions.

Thanks CRŪ Winery for inviting me to be a judge!
If you want Monterey Bay views, wine by the glass, If you want Monterey Bay views, wine by the glass, and delicious small bites, then check out @atasteofmonterey next time you’re on the Monterey Peninsula.

As a monterey local, this wine bar is one of the places I love to take friends and family when they come to visit.

The views are absolutely breathtaking, and you can watch sea lions and whales swim by directly from your table.

Executive Chef Bruce Finch, also updates the small bites menu quarterly and his latest creations, including a French onion grilled cheese sandwich and Thai squash soup, are perfect for cool fall afternoons and evenings

Thank you A Taste of Monterey for hosting me for your seasonal menu preview, I always love seeing what’s new.
