Wine School: The Ripasso Method

Christy sits with a bottle of Valpolicella Ripasso Classico Superiore

School is in session. Wine school that is. I’m pouring a glass of Valpolicella Ripasso Classico Superiore from Big Hammer Wines. (Please note at the time of this post I was an affiliate for Big Hammar Wines and received commissions through purchases through my custom link.)

While I usually focus on California wine, last semester I took an Italian Wine class. Honestly I learned so much and it really helped me to expand my palette and try wine styles I was unfamiliar with.

One style of wine that I learned about was wine made with the Ripasso method.

Ripasso wines undergo a second fermentation. Using the partially dried grape skins left over from the apassapineto process (where grapes are left to dry for a period of months) for Amaorne or Recioto. The result is a more complex wine than the original base wine.

This wine here Valpolicella Ripasso Classico Superiore and is some times know as “Baby Amarone” because it picks up some of the dried fruit characteristics from the Ripasso method.

The “classico” on the label denotes that the grapes were grown in the “classic” or traditional area. Note, this doesn’t mean it’s automatically better. “Superior” refers to the alcohol content, wines labled with this have a higher alcohol percentage than the usual requirements of the DOC/DOCG.

Isn’t that interesting?

A collection of moments from our whirlwind trip to A collection of moments from our whirlwind trip to Germany for the Berlin Marathon. The last time I was in Berlin was in 2007, and a lot has changed in almost 20 years. I enjoyed revisiting spots I’ve been before and adding in some new-to-me ones too.

While Munich is the center for Octoberfest, we were still able to partake in a few Octoberfest celebrations in Berlin. I’m usually a wine drinker, but I really enjoyed trying different German Beers.

On a side note - as a chronic over-packer, I still can’t believe I managed to do the trip with carry-on luggage only.
Help me pick the @cruwinery Chowder Cook-off champ Help me pick the @cruwinery Chowder Cook-off champion! I’m a big fan of wine and food pairings, so you can imagine how excited I was when CRŪ Winery asked me to be one of the judges for their annual Chowder Cook-Off.

The two finalists prepared their chowders live in front of an audience at the winery while attendees sipped on wine and mixed and mingled.

Then when the chowders were ready the judging began.

As one of the members of the judging panel our job was to judge the chowders by the originality of the recipe, and how well it paired with CRŪ Chardonnay.

It was a really fun afternoon! This is my second year judging and it’s become one of my favorite annual traditions.

Thanks CRŪ Winery for inviting me to be a judge!
