Monterey Wine Tasting Guide: Cannery Row and Old Monterey

Christy from Christy on the vine hold a glass of red wine at Pierce Ranch Vineyards on Cannery Row, Monterey CA.

While Carmel-by-the-Sea may be more famous for wineries, did you know we have several wine tasting rooms right in Monterey? While we don’t have as many wineries as Carmel, there are some fun boutique tasting rooms in the Cannery Row area and in Old Monterey, including two options a few steps away from the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Take a self guided wine tour of Monterey with my suggestions for best wine-tasting in Monterey. Note: Some of these tasting rooms also function like wine bars where you can order a bottle or wine by the glass.

Pierce Ranch Vineyards

Pierce Ranch Vineyards is a cute tasting room inside of a Bungalow right off of Cannery Row in Monterey. They offer wine tasting both outdoors in their garden and indoors at their bar.

Pierce Ranch specializes in Portuguese and Spanish varieties grown in the San Antonio Valley AVA. I’ve been a member here for over a year and love that they update their tasting flights regularly. They also often have live music. (Pierce Ranch is now closed. At the time of this review I was an active wine club member)

Bargetto Winery

Bargetto’s main location is in Aptos, but they have a tasting room right in the heart of Cannery Row, just a stones throw from the Monterey Bay Aquarium.

Bargetto specializes in multiple Pinot Noir clones and Italian Varieties. Most of their wine is from the Santa Cruz Mountains AVA. I recommend you try their signature Italian style blend, La Vida. I’ve been a member here for about a year and I usually pop in a few times a month. (At the time of this post I was an active wine club member.)

Sparkling wine tasting and french fries at C Bar in the C Restaurant in the Intercontinental Hotel in Cannery Row.

C Restaurant

The bar at the C Restaurant in the Hotel InterContinental Clement Monterey offers a fun wine bar experience with their wine list and California Rosé Sparkling wine flight complete with strawberries. In my mind this makes it the best wine bar in Monterey. They also have a great selection of local wines by the glass and a full menu. The hotel is also only a few steps away from the Aquarium. After a day of wine tasting in Monterey, I love to have dinner outdoors at one of their fire pits.

Wine Tasting in the Old Monterey Area

Puma Road Portola Plaza

Puma Road’s main tasting room is at their winery on the River Road Wine Trail, but they’ve opened a satellite location at Portola Plaza. You can taste through a flight or buy wine by the glass. This location is really convenient if you are staying in Old Monterey or are getting dinner on Old Fisherman’s Wharf.

Glass of red wine and menu at Comanche Cellars Tasting Room on Alvarado Street in old Monterey.

Comanche Cellars

Comanche Cellars is located centrally on Alvarado Street amongst the restaurants and bars. It’s a great stop during the weekly Monterey Farmer’s Market on Tuesdays. They offer a few different wine tasting flights and also wine by the glass. I like their SLH Pinot Noir which you can also get by the glass at Alverado Brewery.

I take my judging duties very seriously! Last year was so much fun and I’m happy they asked me to return.

If you love live cooking demonstrations, wine pairings, and chowder, then this is the event for you. There’s wine tasting and small bites while the chowder is prepared live, and then everyone gets to taste the finished chowders.

It’s always my favorite event during Monterey Car Week, because food and wine are in the spotlight - along with some absolutely amazing cars.

I also love that so many of our local wineries are at the event, and it’s a great opportunity to try new-to-me producers as well. Thank you @cruwinery for the ticket, I had so much fun!

This event is not only my first event for Monterey Car Week, but it’s one of my favorites - they even close Del Monte Blvd off!

@bernarduswinery came in strong with one of the largest bottles of wine I’ve ever seen - I was told it’s a Methusala which holds 6 liters of wine!

@adoberoadwines brought in a great selection of their wines, including their racing themed box set and their race car!

Cheers to the start of Car Week!
Trend or no trend, it’s always chic to make home h Trend or no trend, it’s always chic to make home happy hour into an occasion and especially when you have wines from @cruwinery. #CRUpartner

I don’t know about you, but this warmer weather has me reaching for lighter wines especially Albariño and Rosè and I’m a big fan of both of CRŪ’s.

I’ve also always enjoyed home happy hour - while I love exploring new wine bars and restaurants, sometimes the best place to connect is at home with family and friends. Plus there’s no dress code or waitlist.

Now that it’s Car Week in Monterey, I know I’m going to enjoy a glass or two of wine at home - no reservation required!

Part of the @methodoregon Grand Tasting Weekend, this educational event walked us through the production process for traditional method sparkling wine and was followed by a Bubbles Block Party where we celebrated all things Oregon sparkling wine.

After seeing the behind the scenes of the production process, and then tasting vintage bubbles I have a new found appreciation for sparkling wine.

Thank you @lytlebarnett and @methodoregon for hosting us!
