What to Wear Wine Tasting in Carmel

Christy wears a camel colored vneck sweater and white jeans while wine tasting at Galante Vineyards in Carmel.

So you’re planning a trip to Carmel-by-the-Sea? You’ve heard how Carmel is a charming California seaside town, that feels like a European fairytale with its storybook architecture, gourmet farm-to-table food, luxury shopping and fine wine.

And with Carmel’s close proximity to the Santa Lucia Highlands AVA, do you plan to visit the local wineries that grow grapes in the SLH but have tasting rooms in Carmel? With over 14 tasting rooms in the downtown area on the Carmel Wine Walk there are plenty of options for you to go wine tasting. But what should you wear?

Before you decide on an outfit, take these style tips from a local… the two most important things to consider are the location of the tasting rooms and the weather!

When you go wine tasting in Carmel, you won’t be visiting expansive vineyard estates like in Napa. For wine tasting in Carmel, you’ll be visiting tasting rooms with an elegant wine bar vibe.

In downtown Carmel, the wine tasting rooms you’ll be visiting are cozy. Mostly with an expansive bar area where you will stand and table seating near the bar. (If you’re visiting Carmel Valley on the other hand, the weather is warmer and the tasting rooms are bigger.)

If you are looking for larger estates where you can see the vines, pack a picnic and even see the wine making equipment, you’ll want to head over to the River Road Wine Trail.

When you visit Carmel, you’ll probably want to leave your oversized sun hat at home and instead following these tips for what to wear to look like a local with these cute Carmel outfits. Full disclosure this post contains affiliate links where I may earn a commission at no cost to you.

Dress Casually but Elegant

Carmel may be a beach town, and while people tend to dress casually during the daytime, you won’t want to wearing your swimwear cover-up wine tasting! First of all you will be really cold any time of year! This isn’t Southern California, and it can get chilly in the mornings and evenings no matter what time of year it is.

While, the wine tasting rooms don’t have strict dress code, except requiring shoes and a shirt, you’ll want to looking put together or you’ll stand out as a toursit!

Think nice shoes, a nice purse and casual but put-together clothing and you’ll fit right in. Since the fog may roll in during the afternoon, you will want to consider this temperature change when planning your outfit. Bring a warmer layer and you’ll be fine, or if you’re worried about “looking cute” leave it in the car or in your bag just in case.

When I go wine tasting in the summer, I usually wear a dress, heeled sandals, or espadrilles and bring a sweater, especially if I plan to stay out for dinner.

In the winter on the other hand, I wear a sweater, jeans and boots and bring a light jacket with me just in case.

Christy wears a sundress and a hat.
A simple sundress is a great choice for a hot summer day. Just don’t forget to pack a sweater for later.

Bring Layers

With its coastal location, the weather in Carmel can change quickly. The average temperature throughout the year in Carmel is the mid 40s to the high 60s.

Despite the annual averages, it can be warm and sunny during the summer months, especially in August and September. Be warned that even on sunny summer days, it can get chilly in the evening if the fog rolls in.

I recommend packing a light jacket or a sweater. If you do get cold and don’t have enough layers, there are plenty of boutiques in Carmel to buy a sweater, or you can get a souvenir sweatshirt at one of the tourist traps.

A crisp linen shirt over a tank makes a great layer for summer days.

Wear Comfortable Shoes

Downtown Carmel is small and the tasting rooms are all within walking distance. However, the downtown area is located on a hill that slopes towards the beach and the sidewalks can be uneven.

I recommend you wear comfortable walking shoes you will most likely be walking between locations.

Many of the wine tasting rooms offer seating but depending on how crowded the location is you may be standing at the bar for the duration of your visit. I recommend stylish flats, sneakers or wedges if you are looking for some height. If your heart is set on heels, go for a block heel over a stiletto.

Christy sits outside a green door and wears a white sweater, jeans and ankle boots.
Ankel boots are a comfortable option for Carmel in cooler months,

Side note and popular trivia fact, the municipal code of Carmel technically bans wearing heels over 2 inches without a permit.

While I have never seen this rule enforced, and I’ve seen plenty of people wearing heels over 2 inches in the years I’ve lived here, it is part of the municipal code.

Should you wish to comply, you can visit City Hall during business hours to obtain a free high heel permit. I have mine!

Think Twice Before Wearing Scented Products

Wine tasting is a sensory experience and scent is an important factor in fully enjoying wine. If you wear perfume or scented lotion, it will affect your perception of the nose and the flavor of a wine.

I recommend skipping the perfume and any flavored lip products during wine tasting. Also please be considerate of other guests in the tasting room when making perfume or cologne decisions.

Most Importantly, Wear What Makes You Feel Good!

Wearing clothes that make you feel confident and comfortable is the most important tip I can give you. And if you need something you can always pop into Carmel Plaza or the boutiques to pick up something. Or pop into Carmel Bakery for some hot coffee to warm you up.

Now have fun wine tasting!

The @slhwine Sun, Wind & Wine Festival is coming u The @slhwine Sun, Wind & Wine Festival is coming up next month on May 3rd. If you’re a fan of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, this event is for you - it’s almost a master class in tasting the terroir of the Santa Lucia Highlands AVA. You can even taste some older wines and large format bottles in the first hour if you purchase VIP tickets.

I also love that there is a shuttle to the event that leaves directly from Monterey Peninsula College’s parking lot and drives you out to the event location.

It’s so handy and saves you coordinating travel to Mer Soleil and back. Ubering out there is easy enough, but getting an uber to pick you up there is tricky! Just a heads up, shuttle tickets are an additional fee from entrance tickets and the VIP ticket holder shuttle that gets you there for the extra hour has sold out before.

Easy snack pairing that feels ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This is my go to pairing when I have friends come over. It’s perfect for @shareandpairsundays as it feels fancy, but it’s really easy to make. I think is a great combination for when you’re sitting on the couch and chatting with your friends.

You’re going to want a traditional method brut sparkling wine with this. Brut is one of the driest (not sweet) styles and that’s what’s going to taste best with the salty popcorn. I went with @roedererestate.

I lie to pop my own popcorn on the stove but you can always use microwave or ready made popcorn. While I don’t use butter because I’m lactose intolerant, butter is a great edition to this recipe and makes it feel even richer.

The acidity and effervescent bubbles go great with the salty popcorn, and if you use butter, it cuts through the richness of the butter.

POV @scratchwines winemakers dinner. I can’t bel POV @scratchwines winemakers dinner. I can’t believe this dreamy dinner celebrating winemaker Sabrine Rodems’ 20th anniversary of making wine was almost a year ago.

Sabrine’s wines from both Scratch and @wrathwines were excellently paired with a multiple course dinner prepared by the excellent Chef Selene Johnson (@mamachefselene)

This was truly a dinner to remember. Thank you again for the invitation!
I took basic winemaking this semester at Cabrillo I took basic winemaking this semester at Cabrillo College and there was a lot more math in it that I thought.

If you’ve been following me for a while, then you know I’ve been in the Cabrillo College Wine Studies program since 2021!

My good friend @fannys.wine.bliss went through the program and encouraged me to take a class taught by @deborahparkerwong. After my first class I was hooked and have been taking classes since. This is actually my last semester!

Basic Winemaking was taught by Mikael Wargin of @warginwines. I couldn’t ask for a better instructor, he is so knowledgeable.

His degree is in Microbiology, so we really leaned into the science side - but thankfully we didn’t have to memorize any equations for the tests.

To be honest, I almost cried when he first started balancing equations - I haven’t had a chemistry class since 11th grade and I studied Art History in the Visual Arts in college. Lucky for me our tests were open book and you can even take the class pass/no pass.

If you’re interested in learning more about wine in an academic setting I recommend looking into Cabrillo College’s Wine Studies Program. They offer a certificate and have just started their Associates Degree program too. While this class was in person, most of the classes are hybrid And you only go to the Aptos campus a few times a semester for tastings.

@joycewinecompany Spring Release Party was a blast @joycewinecompany Spring Release Party was a blast. The party was at their Arroyo Seco location in Soledad and the weather was perfect. The last time I visited it was pouring rain!

I really enjoyed tasting their lineup, especially the Russell Joyce label, which I am not as familiar with. I was especially impressed with the Proprietary Blend, a Bordeaux style red blend from Carmel Valley AVA.

Thank you for inviting us Joyce Wine Co. we appreciate you hosting us!

@pebblebeachfoodandwine returns to Monterey Bay in @pebblebeachfoodandwine returns to Monterey Bay in two weeks! Last year was my first time attending this iconic weekend and the first time they brought the event back since I’ve been living in Monterey.

If you’re a foodie like me, then this event is not to be missed. While there are plenty of events including seminars, walk-around tastings, lunches and dinners, I think the crown jewel is the Tasting Pavilion on Saturday and Sunday.

This is event is a walk-around tasting like no other. You actually can meet award winning chefs as they and their teams serve you small bites. You can also sample handmade cocktails from mixologists and of course there is wine tasting.

I was lucky enough to receive a media ticket to attend and I also volunteered at some of the wine seminars and revived access to some events.
