Around the World in Seven Days of Sparkling Wine – Spain

Today we are visiting Spain on our Sparkling Wine World Tour.

Christy stands at a table with a bottle of Segura Viudas Reserva Heredad Cava.

Cava is a sparkling wine made in the traditional method.

Sparkling wine in Spain was first produced in 1872 by Josep Raventós who learned the traditional method from France. The Raventós family still produces wine today. Please note that some of the wines in the “Around the World in Seven Days of Sparkling Wine” were provided to me as trade samples.

The word “cava” means cave in Spanish and refers to the cave/cellars where the wine is aged. The name was officially adopted in 1972.

95% of Cava production is centered in the Penedès region of Catalonia in Northeastern Spain, just outside of Barcelona.

Cava has “Denominación de Origen” (DO) status in Spain, which requires Cava producers to follow specific rules and regulations.

Cava is divided into different categories depending on the amount of time it is aged:

Cava de Guarda (9 months +)

Cava Reserva (18 months +)

Cava Gran Reserva (30 months+)

Cava de Paraje Calificado. (36 months+)

The most common grapes in Cava are Macabeu, Parellada and Xarello, but international varieties such as Chardonnay can also be used.

Segura Viudas Reserva Heredad Cava.

Today’s featured wine is Segura Viudas Reserva Heredad.

Segura Viudas is located in the Penedès region of Spain, and while founded in 1959, the “Heredad” or estate can trace its roots back to the 12th century and initially belonged to theMonastery of Sant Cugat.

Segura Viudas Reserva Heredad iis 75% Macabeo and 25% Chardonnay.

Aged at more than 24 months with a minimum of 15 months on the lees, categorizes this wine as a Cava Reserva.

The dosage is 9g/l making this Cava brut.

I found it to have slightly floral notes, lemon, green apple and toast. On the palate there were hints of brioche and small, fine bubbles with a lovely mousse.

I take my judging duties very seriously! Last year was so much fun and I’m happy they asked me to return.

If you love live cooking demonstrations, wine pairings, and chowder, then this is the event for you. There’s wine tasting and small bites while the chowder is prepared live, and then everyone gets to taste the finished chowders.

It’s always my favorite event during Monterey Car Week, because food and wine are in the spotlight - along with some absolutely amazing cars.

I also love that so many of our local wineries are at the event, and it’s a great opportunity to try new-to-me producers as well. Thank you @cruwinery for the ticket, I had so much fun!

This event is not only my first event for Monterey Car Week, but it’s one of my favorites - they even close Del Monte Blvd off!

@bernarduswinery came in strong with one of the largest bottles of wine I’ve ever seen - I was told it’s a Methusala which holds 6 liters of wine!

@adoberoadwines brought in a great selection of their wines, including their racing themed box set and their race car!

Cheers to the start of Car Week!
Trend or no trend, it’s always chic to make home h Trend or no trend, it’s always chic to make home happy hour into an occasion and especially when you have wines from @cruwinery. #CRUpartner

I don’t know about you, but this warmer weather has me reaching for lighter wines especially Albariño and Rosè and I’m a big fan of both of CRŪ’s.

I’ve also always enjoyed home happy hour - while I love exploring new wine bars and restaurants, sometimes the best place to connect is at home with family and friends. Plus there’s no dress code or waitlist.

Now that it’s Car Week in Monterey, I know I’m going to enjoy a glass or two of wine at home - no reservation required!

Part of the @methodoregon Grand Tasting Weekend, this educational event walked us through the production process for traditional method sparkling wine and was followed by a Bubbles Block Party where we celebrated all things Oregon sparkling wine.

After seeing the behind the scenes of the production process, and then tasting vintage bubbles I have a new found appreciation for sparkling wine.

Thank you @lytlebarnett and @methodoregon for hosting us!
