What to Wear Wine Tasting in Carmel

Christy wears a camel colored vneck sweater and white jeans while wine tasting at Galante Vineyards in Carmel.

So you’re planning a trip to Carmel-by-the-Sea? You’ve heard how Carmel is a charming California seaside town, that feels like a European fairytale with its storybook architecture, gourmet farm-to-table food, luxury shopping and fine wine.

And with Carmel’s close proximity to the Santa Lucia Highlands AVA, do you plan to visit the local wineries that grow grapes in the SLH but have tasting rooms in Carmel? With over 14 tasting rooms in the downtown area on the Carmel Wine Walk there are plenty of options for you to go wine tasting. But what should you wear?

Before you decide on an outfit, take these style tips from a local… the two most important things to consider are the location of the tasting rooms and the weather!

When you go wine tasting in Carmel, you won’t be visiting expansive vineyard estates like in Napa. For wine tasting in Carmel, you’ll be visiting tasting rooms with an elegant wine bar vibe.

In downtown Carmel, the wine tasting rooms you’ll be visiting are cozy. Mostly with an expansive bar area where you will stand and table seating near the bar. (If you’re visiting Carmel Valley on the other hand, the weather is warmer and the tasting rooms are bigger.)

If you are looking for larger estates where you can see the vines, pack a picnic and even see the wine making equipment, you’ll want to head over to the River Road Wine Trail.

When you visit Carmel, you’ll probably want to leave your oversized sun hat at home and instead following these tips for what to wear to look like a local with these cute Carmel outfits. Full disclosure this post contains affiliate links where I may earn a commission at no cost to you.

Dress Casually but Elegant

Carmel may be a beach town, and while people tend to dress casually during the daytime, you won’t want to wearing your swimwear cover-up wine tasting! First of all you will be really cold any time of year! This isn’t Southern California, and it can get chilly in the mornings and evenings no matter what time of year it is.

While, the wine tasting rooms don’t have strict dress code, except requiring shoes and a shirt, you’ll want to looking put together or you’ll stand out as a toursit!

Think nice shoes, a nice purse and casual but put-together clothing and you’ll fit right in. Since the fog may roll in during the afternoon, you will want to consider this temperature change when planning your outfit. Bring a warmer layer and you’ll be fine, or if you’re worried about “looking cute” leave it in the car or in your bag just in case.

When I go wine tasting in the summer, I usually wear a dress, heeled sandals, or espadrilles and bring a sweater, especially if I plan to stay out for dinner.

In the winter on the other hand, I wear a sweater, jeans and boots and bring a light jacket with me just in case.

Christy wears a sundress and a hat.
A simple sundress is a great choice for a hot summer day. Just don’t forget to pack a sweater for later.

Bring Layers

With its coastal location, the weather in Carmel can change quickly. The average temperature throughout the year in Carmel is the mid 40s to the high 60s.

Despite the annual averages, it can be warm and sunny during the summer months, especially in August and September. Be warned that even on sunny summer days, it can get chilly in the evening if the fog rolls in.

I recommend packing a light jacket or a sweater. If you do get cold and don’t have enough layers, there are plenty of boutiques in Carmel to buy a sweater, or you can get a souvenir sweatshirt at one of the tourist traps.

Christy wears a linen shirt, jeans and gold accessories at Lepe Cellars in Carmel.
A crisp linen shirt over a tank makes a great layer for summer days.

Wear Comfortable Shoes

Downtown Carmel is small and the tasting rooms are all within walking distance. However, the downtown area is located on a hill that slopes towards the beach and the sidewalks can be uneven.

I recommend you wear comfortable walking shoes you will most likely be walking between locations.

Many of the wine tasting rooms offer seating but depending on how crowded the location is you may be standing at the bar for the duration of your visit. I recommend stylish flats, sneakers or wedges if you are looking for some height. If your heart is set on heels, go for a block heel over a stiletto.

Christy sits outside a green door and wears a white sweater, jeans and ankle boots.
Ankel boots are a comfortable option for Carmel in cooler months,

Side note and popular trivia fact, the municipal code of Carmel technically bans wearing heels over 2 inches without a permit.

While I have never seen this rule enforced, and I’ve seen plenty of people wearing heels over 2 inches in the years I’ve lived here, it is part of the municipal code.

Should you wish to comply, you can visit City Hall during business hours to obtain a free high heel permit. I have mine!

Think Twice Before Wearing Scented Products

Wine tasting is a sensory experience and scent is an important factor in fully enjoying wine. If you wear perfume or scented lotion, it will affect your perception of the nose and the flavor of a wine.

I recommend skipping the perfume and any flavored lip products during wine tasting. Also please be considerate of other guests in the tasting room when making perfume or cologne decisions.

Most Importantly, Wear What Makes You Feel Good!

Wearing clothes that make you feel confident and comfortable is the most important tip I can give you. And if you need something you can always pop into Carmel Plaza or the boutiques to pick up something. Or pop into Carmel Bakery for some hot coffee to warm you up.

Now have fun wine tasting!

We visited Air India’s Maharaja Lounge, the newest We visited Air India’s Maharaja Lounge, the newest lounge in SFO and the airlines’ first signature lounge outside of India.

We were taking an 11+ hour flight to Germany, and got to the airport really early to avoid Bay Area rush hour traffic. I thought, where better to relax than one of the Airport Lounges?

We don’t usually fly out of SFO, and I heard about the Maharaja Lounge and was excited to check it out. I’ve been trying to get more into cocktails and was looking forward to trying some of their signature cocktails.

Heads up the lounge is located in the SFO International terminal by the A Gates which you can get to from all of the international gates, but it can be quite the walk! Our flight was at the G Gates and it was a full mile walk.

Was the lounge worth the 2 mile round trip walk? Yes! 10/10 we enjoyed the ambiance of the lounge and the cocktails were excellent. Hopefully we’ll be back soon!
Take me back to @tidesandterroir! Last Saturday wa Take me back to @tidesandterroir! Last Saturday was so much fun I forgot to take any videos of myself! Seriously though, the inaugural Tasting by the Tides at @visitasilomar was that good of a time.

Over two dozen wineries from Monterey Wine Country were pouring, and local chefs and food purveyors were serving incredible bites inspired by Monterey’s coast and farmland.

And it was hot! Our second summer came out in full force for a beautiful sunny day steps away from the beach. Couldn’t ask for better weather to showcase our part of the coast.

Tides & Terroir was a new two-day wine and food event celebrating the wine, food and community of Monterey Bay. I had so much fun attending on Saturday and capturing social media content on behalf of SLH wine as their social media contractor.

Even though I was filming most of the time (did you see me with my iPhone gimbal? lol) I still had so much fun connecting with winemakers, chefs, friends new and old, and everyone who makes up our food and wine community.

Can’t wait for next year’s Tides & Terroir!

#ad Recently, I attended a farm-to-table dinner ho #ad Recently, I attended a farm-to-table dinner hosted by Robin McBride of the @mcbridesisters to celebrate the release of the new @mcbridesisterscollection Chardonnay, Central Coast California 2025, their first low-alcohol wine at just 9% ABV.

When I started my wine journey in 2021 never did I think I would actually get to meet Robin McBride, and learn about the McBride sisters’ latest wine directly from her.

The dinner was to celebrate not only the launch of the new wine, but also the partnership between the McBride Sisters Wine Company and @castorocellars , the family-owned and operated winery that grows the grapes for this wine.

Then we sat down to a farm-to-table dinner directly in the vineyards and learned about the new Chardonnay from Robin herself.

Sitting around the table, chatting with one another, and sipping wine directly in the vineyard was a wonderful experience. There’s nothing like connecting in person with one another over shared conversation and delicious food and wine.
Confession: I’m an outfit repeater, and thanks to Confession: I’m an outfit repeater, and thanks to @onequince I still look chic. I’ve built my whole summer capsule wardrobe around Quince’s stylish basics.

I’m a big fan of natural fabric fabrics because of my sensitive skin, and their linen and cashmere are both super soft and breathable.

Even before I became a #quincepartner I was wearing quince practically every day in the summer.

I own the same dress and same pants in two different colors - which tells you how much I love their clothes. I also got Sean the same cashmere quarter zip in two different colors, since he liked the first one so much.

Right now Quince is having their insider sale, but it’s only available on their app.

A collection of moments from our whirlwind trip to A collection of moments from our whirlwind trip to Germany for the Berlin Marathon. The last time I was in Berlin was in 2007, and a lot has changed in almost 20 years. I enjoyed revisiting spots I’ve been before and adding in some new-to-me ones too.

While Munich is the center for Octoberfest, we were still able to partake in a few Octoberfest celebrations in Berlin. I’m usually a wine drinker, but I really enjoyed trying different German Beers.

On a side note - as a chronic over-packer, I still can’t believe I managed to do the trip with carry-on luggage only.
