Have you tried wines from the Vinho Verde region of Portugal before?
As I’ve been studying about wine, I’ve been exploring new to me wine regions, especially international ones. I love the opportunity to try indigenous grape varieties and different styles of wine.
I’ve recently been learning about Vinho Verde, Portugal’s largest wine region.
The Vinho Verde region is located in Northwestern Portugal and borders Spain. The name “Vinho Verde” may translate directly to “green wine”, but the name instead refers to the lush, green landscape of the area.
Vinho Verde wines are typically a blend of white wines from indigenous Portuguese grapes. The wines can be divided into two categories:
“Young” featuring crisp, light and fresh wines. Many of these wines are blends of Arinto, Azal, Loureiro and other indigenous Portuguese grapes.
“Premium” featuring intense, complex and mineral wines. The majority of these wines are single varietals of Alvarinho, Aveso, Loureiro, Azal and Arinto.
Vinho Verde wine makes an excellent spring sip, but can also be be enjoyed year round. Follow @vinhoverdewines on instagram to learn more about the region and even some wonderful food pairing ideas.
